M.J. Bale recruits 48 ewes for world-first carbon neutral wool trial

By Imogen Bailey | 13 July 2021
M.J. Bale has completed a world-first commercial trial to create carbon neutral wool, in partnership with Kingston Farm and Sea Forest Tasmania.
48 of Kingston Farm s Merino ewes were involved in the 300-day trial, which aimed to reduce sheep methane emissions to undetectable levels via daily feeds of asparagopsis seaweed.
The trial was informed by the CSIRO s pioneering research into the use of native asparagopsis seaweed as a food supplement to disrupt sheep enteric fermentation.
According to Australia s National Greenhouse Accounts 2014, enteric fermentation from ruminant livestock (sheep, cattle and goats) contributes approximately 10% of total greenhouse-gas emissions across Australia.  ....

OPINION: Simple, cheap ways to capture and store carbon

Creative carbon capture
Last week, the Australian Government pledged half a billion dollars for “clean” energy projects, including $264 million on “carbon capture and storage” (CCS).
This involves capturing emissions from power stations and factories and then burying them.
However, the Climate Council has stated that CCS is “extremely expensive and cannot deliver zero emissions”.
There are, of course, faster, simpler and cheaper ways to capture and store carbon. Firstly, plant more trees, and secondly, stop cutting down existing ones.
A recent study in Science magazine states that globally, a 25 per cent increase in forested area could store more than 200 gigatonnes of additional carbon at maturity. Such a change has the potential to store an equivalent of 25 per cent of the current atmospheric carbon pool. ....

Energy and Emissions Reduction Agreement with South Australia

Prime Minister
The Morrison and Marshall Governments have signed a $1.08 billion State Energy and Emissions Reduction Deal that will deliver secure, reliable and affordable energy to South Australians and help Australia continue to meet and beat its emissions reduction targets.
Under the agreement, the governments will pursue initiatives that create additional dispatchable generation to help deliver affordable and reliable power, unlock gas supplies to help prevent shortfalls in the market, kick-start works on a new interconnector between South Australia and New South Wales, and invest in key emissions reduction projects.
The Commonwealth will contribute $660 million and South Australia will provide $422 million as part of the agreement. ....
