This week I was asked to talk with a small group of students about resources related to eating disorders. Researching this topic was very eye-opening for me, so I wanted you to share this information with you as well.
There are three main types of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder (BED). The National Alliance on Mental Illness explains that people with eating disorders are preoccupied with food and weight issues to the point that they find it difficult to focus on other aspects of their lives. Those with anorexia deny themselves food to the point of self-starvation as they obsesses about weight loss. Very low food intake and inadequate nutrition cause a person to become very thin. There are two common subtypes of anorexia: binge-purge type and restrictive type. ....

Eating Disorders Are Mental Illnesses Made Worse By Pandemic

KLCC s Tiffany Eckert reports on how the COVID-19 pandemic has attributed to an increase in calls for help from those suffering from eating disorders.
Specialists say for someone struggling with an eating disorder, these are dangerous times. COVID-19 has caused disruptions in daily life and forced us to physically distance ourselves from support systems.
The National Eating Disorders Association reports steep increases in calls and online chats, up to 78% more in some months, compared to a year ago.
“People who struggle with Anorexia nervosa, which has the hallmark of restriction, have become more restricted,” she said. “And people who struggle with binge-eating disorder and Bulimia have actually engaged in more bingeing.” ....

Rowan’s struggles with OCD and her body image. Now, Rowan herself is speaking out about a tough experience that she went through with her mother when she was struggling with an eating disorder.
Rowan posted where she admitted, “Every time I think about that night, I cry.”
She recalled, “So, basically that night, I got home and she was really intense. My mom tends to do this thing where she doesn’t react in the best way. Especially at first, she reacts from a place of fear. So, I remember one of the things she told me. She told me, ‘You won’t even eat a fucking vegetable.’ And that stuck with me for a very long time.” There’s a difference between encouraging someone to take care of themselves and mocking them.
