INEC explains use of new registration device for CVR


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it adopted the use of Voter Enrolment Device (VED) for resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to deepen the use of technology in electoral process.
Mr Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, said this when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
He announced that the VED which was based on android tablet would arrive in the country on May 31, for the CVR to resume on June 28.

Okoye said the commission had retired the Direct Data Capture Machine (DDCM) used during the previous registration, and in its place would be an enrolment device. ....

Nigerians remain at NIMC offices as MTN targets service rollout


Even as Nigerians throng offices of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in their hundreds for the National Identification Number (NIN) registration and its linkage with their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM), the agency is taking steps to ensure that the over 203 licensed agents roll out services soon.
The Guardian can authoritatively report that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, was a guest of the Director-General of NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, yesterday, where they brainstormed on strategies to fast-track nationwide rollout by the leading mobile operator.
It was learnt that the guest told his host that MTN Nigeria planned to begin NIN enrolment with no fewer than 54,000 equipment nationwide shortly. ....

Emma Okonji writes that the recent directives by the federal government compelling telecoms operators to suspend the sale and activation of new SIM cards and to within a two-week period, link all registered SIM cards to National Identification Number, is an onerous task as subscribes kick against the directives
Nigerian telecoms subscribers with over 207 million active registered lines, last week, were taken by surprise when the federal government issued two directives, compelling telecoms operators to immediately suspend the registration and activation of new SIM cards, until the completion of the audit of the Subscriber Registration Database, while the other directive compelled telecoms subscribers to submit their NIN to their telecoms service providers within two weeks, from December 16 to 30 to enable service providers synchronise all registered SIM cards to NINs. ....

EFCC, ICPC, CBN, 200 others licensed to boost NIN enrolment

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, has approved the licensing of 173 private sector agents and 30 public sector institutions to conduct enrolment of Nigerians and legal residents into the National Identity Database (NIDB) on behalf of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). 
  
The Director-General/Chief Executive of NIMC, Aliyu Aziz, explained in a statement that the agents were picked after successfully fulfilling all the conditions in the advertised expression of interest (EOI), which was done in 2019 as a first step towards the take-off of the National Digital Identity Ecosystem project. ....
