Terang Family Day Care educator nominated for excellence award
Terang Family Day Care Educator Kerri Fortescue has been nominated for Excellence in the national Family Day Care Awards.
A Family Day Care Educator with Corangamite Shire Council for 13 years, she finds the work incredibly rewarding.
In that time, she has helped educate more than 100 children aged from six months to eight years.
“I love that family day care gives me the opportunity to invite people into my own life and to become part of theirs,” Kerrie said.
“Children see my family day care as a second home.”

The government has committed an additional A$1.7 billion over five years to reduce the cost of childcare for around 250,000 families with more than one child. Another $1.6 billion is going into ensuring each four-year-old child gets 15 hours of preschool a week.
But these budget announcements, framed in part as being a boost for women’s participation in the workforce, hold no good news for the early childhood workforce — 95% of whom are women.
The increase in families using early childhood education and care relies on the stability of the workforce. At the moment, however, an increasing number of educators are leaving the profession due to low pay, feeling undervalued and too much time spent on paperwork. ....

‘Providers’ sought to take over shire’s home day care
THERE are 145 families and 183 children affected by Mornington Peninsula Shire’s decision to stop administering family day care services.
As well as finding “redeployment options” for its two children’s services officers, the shire says it is “committed to supporting each [of 25 educators] to find a preferred [commercial] provider to ensure a smooth transition for themselves and their families”.
The shire says there has been a steady decline in demand for the service, which coincides with a rise in the number of commercial day care providers (“Shire closes door on family day care” ....
