A uranium mine in the northern Niger town of Arlit is scheduled to shut down on 31 March, cutting 600 jobs, after its resources were depleted, leaving mine workers without jobs and a very small payout package, according to an official of the National Union of Mines.

Chinese mining company up for underpaying workers, lack of protective clothing

THE Chinese-owned Fools Investment Mine near Bulawayo has been summoned to the National Employment Council (NEC) for the mining industry to answer charges of underpaying employees and failing to provide protective clothing.
The mine was recently caught in the eye of a storm after one of its directors assaulted two employees over outstanding salaries.
The National Union of Mines Quarrying, Iron and Steel Workers of Zimbabwe (NUMQISWZ), which represents mine workers recently, petitioned the company demanding that it must provide the workers with protective clothing.
The union had given the company up to January 29, to comply with or to respond to the petition. ....

Union Demands Action Over Employee Abuses By Chinese Miner

A LOCAL mine workers’ union has written to Fools Mine outside Bulawayo urging the under-fire Chinese employer to improve its bad relations with employees.
The National Union of Mines Quarrying, Iron and Steel Workers of Zimbabwe (NUMQISWZ) Thursday wrote to the miner urging management there to improve the situation.
This comes as the National Peace and Recreation Commission last week said it was also investigating allegations of beatings on employees by company director Zhang Zhongyi who is 61.
Zhongyi allegedly assaulted two of his employees at the company premises after they confronted management over their outstanding wages.
He was arrested for assaulting Tatenda Mangena and Costan Mhasa and is out on $3 000 bail. ....
