VADODARA/ ANAND: ‘Dagri cow’ which is found in the tribal heartland of Central Gujarat has got national recognition paving way for conservation and preservation of its genes.
After Gir, Kankrej and Dangi, Dagri is the fourth indigenous breed of cow from Gujarat to get national recognition from the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), the nodal agency of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) that registers the new breeds.
“We had prepared the report and submitted it to NBAGR in 2019. This breed has distinct characteristics because of which it has received national recognition,” said Dr K B Kathiria, vicechancellor of Anand Agricultural University (AAU). Kathiria, who is also director of research at AAU, had first noticed this distinct breed during field visits to Dahod a couple of years ago. ....

VADODARA: Gujarat’s indigenous donkey breed which is famed for delivering world’s costliest milk is on verge of extinction.
The population of Halari donkeys, which earned independent breed status just two years back, is steadily declining in its native tract of Jamnagar and Devbhumi Dwarka districts (earlier known as the Halar region of Gujarat).
A survey of the breed’s population revealed that there are just 662 animals of this breed left in the region as compared to 1,112 animals counted in teh first-ever survey done in 2015. These donkeys are spread over an area of 18,176 sq km. ....

A first, genetic institute registers 3 dog breeds

The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), an institute which registers newly identified livestock germplasm, has registered three breeds of dogs Rajapalayam and Chippiparai of Tamil Nadu and Mudhol Hound of Karnataka, taking the total count of the registered livestock to 200.

The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), an institute which registers newly identified livestock germplasm, has registered three breeds of dogs Rajapalayam and Chippiparai of Tamil Nadu and Mudhol Hound of Karnataka, taking the total count of the registered livestock to 200.
This is for the first time that the dog breeds have been registered. Dogs were earlier not included in the livestock category, but now these have been included as companion animal and will be studied by the NBAGR, says Dr RK Vijh, Director. ....
