Cape Town - Ongoing electrical faults on the already dilapidated railway infrastructure are crippling train services with working trains suspended almost everyday leaving commuters stranded.
This after Metrorail announced the suspension of the Monte Vista railway line this week due to electrical faults, with spokesperson Zino Mihi saying their engineers were still busy trying to solve the problem.
United National Transport Union (Untu) spokesperson Sonja Carstens said the union has been very concerned about the situation, because it had a severe impact not only on the commuters but on the whole of Cape Town, especially their members who were the employees. ....

Cape Town - Parliament’s portfolio committee on public enterprises said it was happy with the oversight visit it conducted at Transnet in Bellville. However, it was concerned about the “legacy” of corruption within the entity.
The committee conducted an oversight visit to Transnet operations, Transnet Freight Rail and Transnet Engineering in Bellville on Wednesday, to assess the impact of the infrastructure building programme and developmental initiatives implemented to advance the objectives of the government.
Transnet Engineering chief executive Ralph Mills said they have 145 depots around the country that specialise in maintenance, and they had provided the committee with an example of the type of work they do. ....

Cape Town - Transport and Public Works chairperson in the provincial legislature Daylin Mitchell has noted with concern the 80% decrease in train usage over the past eight years.
Mitchell said that equated to 550 000 people having sought alternative means of transport, and so the R1.4 billion set aside to restore the Central Line, as promised by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has not materialised in Cape Town, despite the pledge for the line to be up and running by September last year.
Mitchell said shortly after the consolidation of the railways under the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa), there had been a constant downward trend which has been exacerbated by endless looting and mismanagement. ....

Cape Town - A Metrorail security guard has been injured and taken to the N1 City Hospital after a train travelling from Kraaifontein to Cape Town with commuters caught fire on Monday afternoon.
Metrorail spokesperson Zino Mihi said they suspected an electrical fault was the reason behind the fire. Mihi said there were commuters on the train but no injuries were reported, stating that only the guard injured his knee.
One motor coach was burnt and one plain trailer partially burnt.
Mihi said and investigation is still under way to determine the cost of the damage. ....
