Guard against resurgence of polio, vaccinate your children, UNICEF warns

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has urged Nigerians to be on guard against the resurgence of polio in the country by ensuring that their children participate in the country’s routine immunisation.   After over three decades, Nigeria precisely on August 25, 2020, declared polio-free by the World Health Organisation, WHO following the struggle to end poliovirus in 1988 championed by global bodies including WHO, UNICEF, and the Rotary Foundation.
Also, the United State Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, and The Gates Foundation spearheaded the campaign through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, GPEI. ....

One year under the world’s longest lockdown, Filipinos are still struggling against the threat of COVID-19. But aside from putting everyone’s health at risk, behind closed doors, this pandemic also exposes women to domestic abuse. 
Reports have shown that, since the lockdown started, domestic violence cases have continuously been increasing. A National Demographic Health Survey records that one in four women has experienced abuse by their partner. While data from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Women & Children Protection Center says that at least one woman or child is abused every 10 minutes in the country.  ....

NHIS Moves to Recover N27bn from Banks, Federation Account

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Prof. Mohammed Nasir Sambo, has disclosed that the management of the Scheme is making efforts to recover missing funds of about N27 billion.
According to Sambo, “We have about N11 billion trapped in the Federation Account since 2014. We have been meeting with the Minister of Finance to see how to get it back. Also, we have been pursuing another N10 billion lodged in Heritage Bank, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been helping us to recover it. When there was COVID-19, N6 billion was taken from the NHIS account without notice. ....

The House of Representatives on Monday held a public hearing on five bills, one of which was seeking establishment of a Federal University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Niger State.
Two of the bills are to establish two Federal Medical Centres, one of which is to be located in Wase Federal Constituency, Plateau State, where the Deputy Speaker Ahmed Wase, has been representing since 2007.
The legislations are titled, ‘A Bill for An Act to Enhance and Promote the Health and Wellbeing of Nigerians to Boost Local Healthcare Capacity,’ and ‘A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Bida, Niger State, for the Purpose of Providing Qualitative Education in Medicine and Health Sciences.’ ....
