Nigeria needs more veterinary doctors but getting them is a big challenge


A government official in Gombe State, north east Nigeria, recently lamented the dearth of veterinary doctors in the state. He said the state had only eight veterinary doctors and around a million farm animals. But the problem is not peculiar just to Gombe.
The Veterinary Council of Nigeria has 9,000 registered members, but only 3,500 are actively practising veterinarians. The rest are in different professions or no longer in the country. According to the council, Nigeria requires a minimum of five veterinarians per local government area for effective containment of disease outbreaks and monitoring. With 774 local government areas, this means Nigeria requires 3,870 veterinarians to work solely at that level. There aren’t enough in active practice even for this requirement. ....

Daily Trust - Why NAPRI is yet to develop cow, sheep, goat breeds


Daily Trust spoke with one of the researchers in the institute on goats and other small ruminants, Dr Sadiku Musa Otaru, and asked why the institute has not been able to also register a breed in goat, sheep and cow.
Unlike the success recorded in the ShikaBrown chicken breed, the researchers gave reasons why the research institute is yet to come up with a breed of either goat, sheep or cow.
He first described the status of goat breeding as “not too good and half hazard,” adding that there is no control. He alleged that people who have money usually go outside the country and bring foreign breed of goats to cross-breed with the local ones in an unregulated manner, which should not be the case. ....
