In a perfect end to 2020, Detail First, skippered by Hobart teacher Scott Broadby, was today declared the overall winner of the TasPorts Hobart to Launceston Yacht Race 2020.
The crew of Detail First, still coming to terms with their success, accepted the silverware from Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, AC, Governor of Tasmania, at the official prize-giving presentation at the Derwent Sailing Squadron today. ....

Tasmanian entrant Alive, owned by Phil Turner, has set a new race record in the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race.
Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine and sailing with a mostly Tasmanian crew, finished the race at 19:30:52 on Monday 28 December 2020, with a corrected time of one day, eight hours, two minutes and 16 seconds, beating the race record set by Crotty Legal and Dental (Gary Smith / Geoff White) in 2008 by one hour, 31 minutes and 42 seconds. ....

After a tough two days of sailing, the Hobart-based team,
Detail First, is the provisional winner of the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race, with an IRC corrected elapsed time of 1 day, 22 hours, 49 minutes and 18 seconds.
While
Alive, skippered by Duncan Hine and owned by Philip Turner, won line honours and set a new race record, the Notice of Race for the event determines the overall winner as the winner on IRC handicap overall.
The result for
Detail First skipper Scott Broadby, sailing his Farr 1104, is a testament to the team’s hard work and grit on the race track, and to the race itself, in which boats under 40 feet can take the silverware. ....

The TasPorts Launceston to Hobart fleet took a battering overnight with four boats now retired from the race.
After a slow start, the fleet encountered the forecast west to south westerly winds averaging 25 to 35 knots for Banks Strait and adjacent areas.
At 20:24, Jeff Cordell, skipper of B&G Advantage and a stalwart of the race, retired after his Mumm 36 was dismasted. Sailing underpowered, with a storm jib and a reef in the main, Cordell said the mast broke in two stages and they lost the lot. There was no incident, we had done our rig checks and were underpowered, running dead flat at the time, but something just gave way, with the mast shearing off at the deck. It took us 20 minutes to cut the rig ....
