Experts still startled over Yangminshan buffalo deaths

The sudden deaths of dozens of wild buffaloes in Yangmingshan National Park over the past four months have triggered questions about their protection and how much human intervention might be necessary.
Since the 1930s, water buffaloes have been grazing on mountain grasslands on Yangmingshan (陽明山), when the Japanese colonial administration set up a pasture in the Qingtiangang (擎天崗) area to graze cattle and other livestock.
In 1952, the government allowed local farmers to use the area as grazing ground for their water buffaloes, which they kept for heavy-duty farm work.

Yangmingshan Park to appeal fine over deaths of buffaloes

The Yangmingshan National Park Service on Wednesday said it would appeal a NT$75,000 fine from the Taipei City Animal Protection Office, which accused the park of causing the deaths of water buffaloes by corralling them with fences.
In the past few months, 24 dead water buffaloes have been found in Yangmingshan (陽明山), the office said.
The park service rejected the city government’s characterization that it was holding the water buffaloes in captivity, saying that it was only building new fences to keep the animals from trampling on farmlands within the park. ....
