New collaboration expands post-secondary access for students in rural and remote communities

Contact North B.C. is expanding its access for post-secondary students in remote communities.
New learning centres in remote northwestern B.C. communities are providing on-site supports and reliable online access to programs at all 25 of the province’s public post-secondary institutions.
Contact North B.C. is a collaboration between Coast Mountain College and Indigenous communities. It was created with the goal of expanding post-secondary access for students living in remote and rural communities where there are also large numbers of Indigenous students. Since the soft launch in January 2021, students have registered in more than 400 courses.
The Province is providing approximately $1.5 million for the project that will offer services across the traditional territories of the Haida, Nisga’a, Gitxsan, Wet’suwet’en, Tsimshian, Haisla and Tahltan Nations. School District 92, School District 54 and the Métis Nation in Terrace will also be participating. ....

State to Launch Australia’s First Probe Into Impacts of Colonisation
The Australian state of Victorian has announced the establishment of a truth and justice commission that will investigate the historical and ongoing effects of colonisation on Aboriginal Victorians and propose steps for reconciliation.
As the first commission of its kind in Australia, the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission will be modelled after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission led by Nelson Mandela in South Africa after the end of its apartheid. It will be charged with investigating all acts committed against Aboriginal people, both in the past and present, and is expected to begin in July with a final report due three years later. ....

Report reveals 72,500 rural and remote Australians admitted to hospital each year due to medicine-related problems

A new report has revealed 1.3 million rural and remote Australians do not take their medicines at all or as intended adding an estimated $2.03 billion to our annual health care costs.
The Medicine Safety: Rural and remote care report, developed for the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia by Charles Sturt University, also found that 72,500 rural and remote Australians are admitted to hospital each year due to problems with their medicines, costing the health care system $400 million.
The report will be launched by NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard in Sydney on Saturday 13 March. ....

Northern Health continues to report Covid-19 school exposures.
Between March 1 and 3 Charles Hays Secondary School reported an exposure event. Ecole Roosevelt Park Community School in Prince Rupert reported exposure between March 2 and 5. Mount Elizabeth Secondary School in Kitimat reported an exposure event on March 1. Caledonia Secondary School in Terrace reported an exposure event on March 1 and 3.
Northern Health is reminding everyone that no action is required unless contacted directly by Northern Health. ....
