Mining giant Fortescue apologises for clearing land on Aboriginal sacred site without elders present

Australia s Fortescue Metals Group has apologised to an Aboriginal group for clearing land on a heritage site while failing to meet a government condition for representatives of the community to be present when the damage took place.
It is the week s second such incident, despite pressure on Australian iron ore miners to show they have improved practices to manage important sites after Rio Tinto destroyed two sacred rock shelters for a mine expansion last May.
Fortescue had state government permission to clear the land in the Weelumurra Creek area registered as sacred to the Wintawari Guruma people, on condition that community elders were present to perform salvage and cultural rites, four documents reviewed by Reuters showed. ....

SA inquiry into governance of Aboriginal organisations attracts criticism

Aboriginal leaders in South Australia say they want to see the “highest level of accountability and transparency” in community organisations, but have criticised an inquiry into issues of governance approved by the Marshall government last week.
The South Australian Parliament approved a formal inquiry into the “governance standards” of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations across the state, after a campaign from Aboriginal community members.
The inquiry will review the accountability, transparency, cultural authority and financial obligations of community controlled organisations and will be conducted by the Aboriginal Lands Parliamentary Standing Committee.
It’s a move that has been criticised by Indigenous leaders across the state as “undermining” Aboriginal people’s ability to self-govern and impeding on their path to self-determination.  ....

Legal action to be launched over Lake Torrens drilling decision

The Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation is mounting a legal challenge against the South Australian Government s approval of a drilling exploration project on sacred land in the state’s mid-north.
Earlier this month, the Premier Steven Marshall, who is also the Aboriginal Affairs Minister, gave the approval for drilling exploration by company, Kelaray, a subsidiary of Argonaut Resources, to search for ore bodies on the surface of Lake Torrens.
Lake Torrens is a sacred site to four separate Aboriginal nations - the Kokatha, Barngarla, Adnyamathhna and Kuyani people.
Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson Jason Bilney told NITV News that his people are “disappointed” with the government’s approval and that they re now preparing a legal challenge.  ....
