Satellite dishes to provide NBN connectivity have now been installed on 100 Rural Fire Service building and evacuation centres across Australia under the $37.1 million Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) package.
If mobile and fixed-line connectivity goes down in a bushfire, these satellite dishes will allow continued broadband connectivity-including for voice service-to these vital locations.
Minister for Communication, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said communications services are vital to help emergency services and affected communities keep safe during emergencies.

Redflow eyes "megawatt-hour" market for its ZBM flow batteries

ASX-listed battery storage company Redflow has flagged plans to take its home-grown zinc-bromine flow battery technology to the megawatt-hour scale, as it works towards kicking off production of its third generation of 10kWh ZBM batteries in the second half of 2021.
Redflow on Friday reported a loss of $2.9 million for the first half of FY21, a result the company said was at odds with progress made over the six-month period, including deployment of its largest single battery energy storage system in Australia.
The Brisbane-based company said it had delivered revenue of $431,000 for the half-year, down from $1.4 million for the same time period last year, a performance affected by delays in the conversion of sales opportunities due to Covid-19. ....

Dozens of zinc-bromine flow battery units will be deployed at 56 remote telecommunications stations in Australia, supplied by manufacturer Redflow.
They are being installed as part of an Australian Federal government initiative to improve the resilience of communications networks in bushfire and other disaster prone areas of the country. Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) is a multi-faceted programme worth AU$37.1 million (US$28.85 million) in total. ....

When facing a disaster communication is key.
In a move to strengthen Bundaberg s capabilities if disaster strikes, satellite communications equipment has been installed at the Multiplex - the designated emergency evacuation centre.
The equipment will enable internet connectivity in the event of a disaster.
The installation is part of the Strengthen Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) program.
Following the events of the 2019 bushfire season, NBN worked with the Federal Government to enhance telecommunications resiliency.
Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey said efficient and timely communications could be one of the greatest assets during a natural disaster.

NBN Co rolls out disaster satellite services

NBN Co has opened its first NBN Disaster Satellite Service in the outskirts of Canberra at the Namadgi National Park Visitors Centre.
The service aims to boost the support offered to communities and emergency services personnel during and in the aftermath of emergency events, such as bushfires and floods.
The Disaster Satellite Service provides a back-up communications connection using satellite technology and will be switched on to ‘disaster mode’ during an emergency event, providing free full satellite broadband functionality, including Wi-Fi and video streaming.
NBN Co said it is the first service to be rolled out though funding provided by the federal government’s Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) package to increase the number of temporary emergency network services. ....
