Rains earlier this week in central and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh not only exposed the vulnerability of rural population amid ravaging Covid-19 pandemic, but also created “havoc and horror” among the masses, as it uncovered “mass shallow graves” along Ganga in different districts with several of the media reports suggest recovery of more than 2,000 such corpses.
In the meantime, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has also taken a serious note of the development and advised Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (the two most populous states) to “immediately” check the trend as this could lead to further spread of Covid-19 infections. ....

The Delhi High Court has asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to inform the court of the procedure to be followed to repatriate foreign nationals, who do not have any documentary proof of their native country. The bench of Justice Prathiba M Singh was dealing with a petition filed by 3 Bangladeshi nationals housed in shelter home in Delhi.
The Kamla Market Police Station informed the court that the 3 petitioners were could not provide any documentary proof in their support but they claim to be Bangladesh citizens and also informed that they do not have any criminal antecedents. The police station has also sent a request letter for deportation to Bangladeshi High Commission. ....

Kolkata, May 8 (UNI) West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday summoned state Chief Secretary to “comprehensively” apprise him on law and order regarding post-poll violence.
Taking to his tweeter handle, Mr Dhankhar said, “Chief Secretary @MamataOfficialhas been called upon to see me today before 7 PM as ACS Home @HomeBengal failed to impart status report on law and order regarding post poll violence. He even did not forward reports of DGP @WBPolice and CP @KolkataPolice sent to him on May 3.
The governor said the State is facing worst post election violence where people are being made to pay with their lives and freedom only for having exercised right to vote in democracy and state apparatus has virtually abandoned lawful obligations. No input to the constitutional head makes mockery of constitution and rule of law. ....

NEWDELHI The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (
MHA) has sent a four-member team led by an additional secretary-level officer to
West Bengal to look into incidents of violence after the declaration of
Assembly election results.
The MHA has also asked the West Bengal Governor to send a report on the law and order situation in the state. According to the ministry, the team will review the situation in West Bengal and submit a report on the ground situation. “The MHA team will submit its report on violence within 48 hours,” an official said. ....

SDRF Fund to Fight Corona: The Centre has released Rs 308 crore as the first instalment of SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund) for the State for fiscal 2021-22.
Under normal circumstances, SDRF funds are released in the middle part of the calendar year. However, considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the first instalment of SDRF money has been released early this year. The funding pattern of the SDRF is 90:10 between the Centre and the State Government. ....
