The Svay Rieng Provincial Administration said that areas of the bicycle assembly factory A & J (Cambodia) Co Ltd in the Tai Seng 1 Special Economic Zone in Bavet town have been shut down and turned into a quarantine centre after more than 1,000 workers fled the premises fearing Covid-19 infection on May 26.
The provincial administration said 54 out of 145 people were tested positive for Covid-19 in the front building of the factory. ....

Collective Union of Movement of Workers (CUMW) president Pav Sina wrote a letter on May 24 to Minister of Labour Ith Sam Heng requesting that the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) expand its vaccination campaign to factories in the provinces in the near future.
In a letter obtained by The Post on May 24, Sina expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Hun Sen for launching a vaccination campaign aimed at factory workers in the vicinity of Phnom Penh. ....

Phat Rath and Oeun Sokheng were informed on April 8 that they were both positive for COVID-19. The couple, who live in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district, work at Din Han Enterprise, a garment factory that is a recent hotspot for the disease.
The two garment workers live in a rented room, paying $25 a month for the basic living facility. Many garment factory workers in Phnom Penh live in shared, rented rooms with congested communal areas and bathrooms.
Phat Ratha said after testing positive, the Health Ministry had not informed them if they had to go to a medical facility or a designated COVID-19 hospital. They were anxiously waiting at their rented room, all the while Oeun Sokheng’s symptoms were getting worse. ....

Workers at two factories – one in Pursat province and the other in Phnom Penh – staged protests on January 12 and 14 respectively to demand seniority payments and other benefits.
In Phnom Penh, more than 1,000 workers of Ying Hy Garment Co, Ltd, in Stung Meanchey commune’s Trea village protested after the factory delayed issuing their seniority payments again, allegedly breaking a promise made earlier this month.
Bronh Chanty, one of the protesting workers, said: “We demand the seniority payments for 2019 and 2020. The company had promised to give us the payments this year, citing the Covid-19 crisis as reason [for the delay]. ....
