The farming of fast-growing, highly efficient aquaculture species that are able to resist impacts of costly diseases will soon become a reality, with James Cook University and partners awarded $4.9 million from the Australian Research Council through their Industrial Transformation Research Program.
The Director of the new Research Hub, Professor Dean Jerry, said the funding will establish the “ARC Research Hub for Supercharging Tropical Aquaculture through Genetic Solutions”, which will be funded for 5 years and work to transform the productivity of aquaculture species farmed in the north.
The program will apply modern genetic, selective breeding and artificial intelligence approaches to dramatically improve the productivity of farming five important northern Australian aquaculture species, namely barramundi, pearl oyster, black tiger prawn, grouper and marine red-algae. ....

More than $9 million in ARC grants have been awarded to two UNSW Sydney projects providing research into sensors for the health sector and new technologies for Australia’s infrastructure needs.
UNSW Sydney has secured $9.9 million in Australian Research Council (ARC) Industrial Transformation Research Program grants for 2021, topping the nation for the largest share of funding.
The two UNSW projects will provide innovative research and create stronger connections between research and industry in the health, urban, energy and resources sectors.
In a media release, Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge announced the federal government is investing $74 million to open 16 new research hubs and training centres around the country, as part of the commitment to commercialising Australian research. ....

The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been awarded $5m funding as part of the Australian Government’s commitment to commercialising Australian research under its Industrial Transformation Research Program, announced today (Wednesday 21 July 2021).
The Program will fund $36.4 million into eight new Research Hubs and $37.8 million will see eight new Training Centres commence operations.
UOW has received the funding for an ARC Training Centre in Energy Technologies for Future Grids, led by Professor Kashem Muttaqi from the School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences. ....
