Startups pitch their services to solve public sector challenges
The Marshall Government is using the creative thinking of local startup companies to deliver better services for taxpayers whilst enhancing the economic viability of startup sector in South Australia.
Eight local startups have successfully pitched their product or service to the State Government through the Go2Gov program which calls on local innovators to work in partnership with government agencies to solve public sector challenges.
Digital WorQ, Be Well Co, Lumin Sports Technology, Opensensing, The Moonshine Lab and IO Energy were successful in securing funding that will enable their projects to enter the feasibility phase after responding to specific public sector challenges, while businesses Personify Care and Joey Crowd successfully pitched novel ideas through the open challenge category. ....

A group of unions has descended on Parliament House, calling for a royal commission into the fruit and vegetable industry, claiming it has the worst exploitation of any workforce in Australia.

A particularly delicious relish on a panini was the catalyst for a complete change of lifestyle and business for Whangarei couple Robin and Heather Nitschke.
On being told it was a tamarillo relish, popular with
customers but hard to get, they were inspired enough to leave their jobs, buy a lifestyle block in Northland, plant a tamarillo orchard and start developing tamarillo products.
Robin said the success of their products over the past 14 years meant they were now concentrating solely on developing markets for the Tamco range of tamarillo relish, vinaigrette and fruit preserve. ....

Kiwifruit Harvest Taster Day: Registrations Open

An initiative giving people an insight into working in
the kiwifruit industry over harvest is about to kick
off.
The initiative – led by New Zealand Kiwifruit
Growers Inc. (NZKGI) and funded by the Ministry for Primary
Industries (MPI) – sets its sights on encouraging
jobseekers to take up employment in the kiwifruit industry
by providing a free harvest taster day for New Zealand
citizens and permanent residents. It follows NZKGI’s
successful winter pruning and summer-work taster programmes
in 2020.
NZKGI Education Co-ordinator Di Holloway says
the kiwifruit industry needs a workforce of more than 23,000
people from March to July. ....

Venture Taranaki's Branching Out Initiative Explores Avocado

The Venture Taranaki initiative Branching Out is a
collaborative exercise to investigate, explore, package, and
potentially pilot new commercial opportunities that could
add sustainable value to Taranaki’s economy and help the
region’s food and fibre sector become more diverse,
resilient, innovative and in-demand.
Through the
initiative 10-12 high-potential ventures will be identified
and analysed for their feasibility.
In October 2020,
we hosted the project’s first in-person event exploring
kiwifruit as a high-potential venture. Now we will look at
avocado’s potential. Avocados are a proven success story
in other parts of the country, so it is worth consideration ....
