Organizers and community partners addressed these successes and challenges that lie ahead during a press event on Tuesday afternoon at the Millennial Library Park.
“Yes, as a society we have to address the root causes of homelessness and being unsheltered … but we also can eradicate homelessness with one relationship at a time and we’re doing it, we’re seeing it,” said Mitch Bourbonniere, community outreach liaison. “It is going to take a partnership … it’s going to take Downtown Biz, it’s going to take private partnerships, it’s going to take all three levels to maintain this. The city is setting up a tent equipped with water in Central Park. The site will be staffed by city employees and the Downtown Community Safety Partnership. The majority of the city’s outdoor pools and splash pads will be open to help people cool off. Also, the main floor of the Susan A. Thompson building at city hall will be open as a cooling centre.

The city is examining ways to reduce dispatch demand on police, fire, and ambulance services. One city councillor says the examination is a sham.
According to a public service report tabled at the city’s Protection Committee on Wednesday, there were 336,631 calls to the city’s 911 call centre in 2019. Of these calls, 47% were non-urgent, meaning they didn’t represent an immediate threat to life, limb, property, or personal security.

Manitoba earmarks $2.5M for homeless services

The Manitoba government has announced $2.56 million over the next two years for a new wrap-around service program to help transition people who are experiencing homelessness into more stable living arrangements.
Families Minister Rochelle Squires announced on Tuesday, the province is partnering with the Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association for the delivery of the service in Winnipeg.
