The City of Perth Council has adopted a zero per cent increase in rates and no increases in parking fees and charges after passing a community-focused budget last night designed to enhance Perth as a liveable, sustainable and prosperous capital city.
In recognising that residents and ratepayers have done it tough with COVID-19 in the past financial year, the Council not only endorsed maintaining rates at 2020/21 levels, but also found organisational efficiencies in operating costs of 1.7 per cent, equating to $3.5 million in savings.
The $261.7 million budget was designed around our community, with Councillors and executives involved in numerous meetings to hear first-hand the needs and priorities of community groups in the lead up to the Budget. ....

An alternate location for an iconic, bold and contemporary aquatic facility will be investigated after the City of Perth Council last night voted against an aquatic facility as part of the redevelopment of the WACA.
The City of Perth Council last night voted unanimously not to proceed further with the aquatic facility at the WACA after receiving a business plan from independent economic advisers ACIL Allen that comprehensively evaluated the project.
In the business plan presented to Council last night, ACIL Allen estimated the WACA aquatic facility would cost ratepayers $152 million over 40 years and the annual subsidy over the Long-Term Financial Plan would require a 3 per cent increase in the rates yield each year. ....

Council endorses new Safe Shelter
At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 25 May 2021 the City of Perth Council endorsed a two-month night trial of a Safe Shelter at the Citiplace Community Centre from July 2021.
The City of Perth Safe Shelter will be specifically for men experiencing homeless and be open 7 days per week from 10.00pm – 6.30am.
The Safe Shelter will not be an alternative to accommodation services but rather a short-term crisis intervention. There will be no beds.
The Shelter will consist of comfortable chairs, beanbags and mats to encourage rest and enable people to get out of the cold. ....

City of Perth waives Wellington Square reserve hire fees for community events
The City of Perth Council has moved to waive reserve hire fees for community groups, charities and not-for-profits holding community events in Wellington Square until 30 April 2022.
City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said he hoped waiving the hire fee would bring family-friendly and community-based events into Wellington Square, attracting more people from the local and broader metropolitan areas.
“The redeveloped Wellington Square is something the City of Perth should be proud of. It is exciting to see more and more people visit daily and it is a testament to how popular the precinct is, not only for the attractions provided but also as an events space,” Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said. ....
