Richmond pools reopen after 13-month closure

After a 13-month closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both of Richmond’s public pools reopened this week.
“Patrons lined up outside at 6:45 a.m. for the inaugural swim at the Richmond Plunge and the Richmond Swim Center,” the City of Richmond Community Services Department said.
Swimmers must register in advance and are checked in by staff and given lane assignments. Masks must be worn until swimmers enter the water. Swims are limited to 40 minutes, and staff disinfects and preps areas between groups of swimmers.
“Most patrons have expressed their gratitude for being able to be back in the pools, and are very supportive of the new procedures,” the city said. “Lifeguards have been happy to see the old regulars who they were accustomed to seeing on a daily or weekly basis.” ....

Richmond Love Your Block mini-grant application period opens

Calling all Richmond community organizers and beautifiers extraordinaire: The Love Your Block Mini- Grant Program is accepting applications for projects promoting the beautification of our city via volunteer power. Starting today and running through Feb. 26, locals can apply for grant up to $10,000 for projects that are publicly accessible and within the boundaries of the City of Richmond.
The Love Your Block Mini-Grant Program, which is funded through a partnership between the City of Richmond’s Community Services Department and the City Manager’s Office, Economic Development, has $80,000 available for the current grant cycle.
One project during the last Mini-Grant cycle was spurred by Linda Whitmore of the Santa Fe Neighborhood Council, who partnered with Chef Arnon Oren of Anaviv’s Table to offer virtual cooking classes on Zoom to 24 Nystrom Elementary School students. Yet another project spearheaded by Bernadette Roger of the Panandle Annex ....
