Pride flag to be raised at Toronto Catholic Schools in June

Catholic schools in Toronto will raise the Pride flag next month for the first time ever.
In a TCDSB virtual board meeting on Thursday evening, the board voted in favour of proclaiming Pride Month every June and raising the flag at the Board office and at all TCDSB schools.
“We recognize that this is an important step required to demonstrate the TCDSB’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusive environments that are safe and welcoming places for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff, TCDSB Chair Joe Martino and Director Brendan Browne said in a statement Friday morning. ....

Change is coming to the Toronto Catholic District School Board: the Pride flag will fly at all schools this June.
Student Trustee Keith Baybayon says, having it fly, I felt more free. To say that I m more free to be myself. More free to express myself and who I am as a person.
The grade 11 student at Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School identifies as a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community. He says this moment is a symbol of progress.
It means that it s a solidarity between the board and the students and staff, he says.
The vote came after the LGBTQ2S+ advisory committee made three recommendations; that the TCDSB recognize Pride Month in June, that the Pride flag fly at all schools as well as at the board office. ....

The Archdiocese of Toronto has come to the defence of a man who drew complaints to police for comments he made concerning a proposal to fly the gay pride flag to recognize June’s “Pride Month” at Toronto Catholic schools.
Jody Maillet, a father of two students attending Catholic schools, made a presentation on March 4 to a committee of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, during which he said “sending signals that support gay pride messages is contrary to the teachings of the Church and have no place in our schools.” ....

TORONTO, March 9, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) – Police are investigating a Catholic father over allegations that he committed a “hate” crime for asking a Catholic school board not to recognize “Pride month” or fly the rainbow flag at Catholic schools.
