Quebec funds campaign to encourage more diverse field of candidates in municipal elections

The government of Quebec and two municipal associations have launched a campaign to convince women, young people and members of diverse communities to enter municipal politics.
Whether it is in the form of cultural diversity or gender, municipalities must be representative of their citizens, Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest told reporters on Thursday.

After months of false starts, debate, votes and the threat of referendum, the town of Asbestos has finally changed its name.
Quebec Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest on Wednesday approved the rechristening of the small Eastern Townships municipality to Val-des-Sources and also refused a request that the renaming process be put to a local referendum.
