City of Joburg executive mayor Geoffrey Makhubo has announced that the city has formally adopted the provincial government’s plan to develop a smart city in Lanseria – with a proposal that an additional smart city be developed in the Deep South region.
This area of Joburg includes Ennerdale, Lenasia South, Finetown, Zakkaria Park, Vlakfontein and Lehae – stretching as far south as Orange Farm.
During his 2021 State of the Nation Address, president Cyril Ramaphosa outlined plans for a new smart city in Gauteng, which is aimed at changing the “social and economic apartheid architecture”. The smart city project will be located in Lanseria. ....

New controversy over $4M Maryvale railway reserve

Councillors voted unanimously to receive the petition and refer it to the director of infrastructure services for further investigation.
Both Mayor Vic Pennisi and councillor Sheryl Windle commended the Maryvale community on their united efforts, but said it was clear after a recent council workshop that many of the small town’s residents were confused about the development’s trajectory.
“We’ve developed an (Urban Development Framework) in Maryvale and quite a lot of that has been achieved …(but) we need to develop some kind of action plan in relation to Maryvale so we’re not doing this all higgledy-piggledy,” Cr Pennisi said. ....
