Just at the start of their posts with the MRC/Wits Rural Public health and Health Transitions (Agincourt) in early 2020, Drs Bianca Moffett and Jacques du Toit were met with the slow approaching effects of the COVID-19 on the rural community of Bushbuckridge, north of Mpumalanga. Background
The MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) is an exceptional health and population research centre in rural northeast South Africa. It provides an extensive data resource from more than 25 years of longitudinal health and socio-demographic surveillance. Using this platform, the Unit is conducting a Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial to assess the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of a digitally delivered Behavioural Activation Therapy intervention to treat depression among rural adolescents.
The intervention consists of 6 sessions of Behavioural Activation delivered by a smartphone application, supported by weekly phone calls from a trained Peer Mentor over 10 weeks. In addition, adolescents who have been identified t ....

Sequential approach to treating comorbid PTSD and depression
This study is the first randomized control trial to rigorously test a sequential approach to treating comorbid PTSD and major depressive disorder.
Findings from a trial of 52 patients undergoing three types of treatment regime - using only Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), using Behavioural Activation Therapy (BA) with some CPT, or CPT with some BA - found that a combined treatment protocol resulted in meaningful reductions in PTSD and depression severity, with improvements maintained at six-month follow-up investigations.
We sought to examine whether a protocol that specifically targeted both PTSD and comorbid depression would benefit those with this dual diagnosis compared with a solely PTSD-focused protocol, says Flinders PTSD research expert Professor Reg Nixon. ....
