Very few in Malaysia can take credit for elevating the prestige and prominence of classical Indian and contemporary dance like Sutra Dance Theatre founder Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. Words like ‘legendary choreographer’ and ‘cultural icon’ skim the surface of how much this multi-hyphenate has truly contributed to the local and international arts scene. Ramli trained in ballet and modern dance at a time when a career in the arts was dismissed as trivial, going on to lead a four decade-long mission cultivating the Classical Indian dance forms of Odissi and Bharata Natyam both here and abroad. In 2020, Ramli was appointed the artistic director for 13 out of the 17 dance, theatre and music groups featured in Malaysia’s first virtual arts festival, Gerak Angin. RANDOLPH TWP. â Those walking by Randolph High Schoolâs dance studio would immediately notice the energy coming from within, all thanks to school dance program head Michele Adriano De Oliveira of Rockaway. And itâs for that enthusiasm, in part, that had resulted in Adriano being selected as the high schoolâs Teacher of the Year. Prior to starting her career in Randolph, Adriano ran a middle school dance program in Somerset. She was given the opportunity to build a program at the high school in 2008, which she said for her was a dream come true. âOur program is unique in that dance is not typically offered to students as a part of the schoolwide curriculum,â she said. âIn 2014, I had an article published in the NJEA Review magazine where I shed light on the incredible learning opportunities that dance gives our students. ....
