Appeal court affirms Obaseki as Edo governor

Five political parties had filed petitions seeking a nullification of Obaseki’s election.
Some of the petitions focused on the first degree certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the governor, while the Action Alliance and the Action Peoples Party said they were unlawfully excluded from the poll.

Dissatisfied, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its governorship candidate, Iboi Lucky went further to the court of appeal to challenge the tribunal’s verdict.
Delivering judgment in the appeal marked CA/B/EPT/GOV/01 & 1A/2021 Action Democratic Party & Anor v. INEC & 2Ors, the appellate court on Wednesday held that Obaseki did not forge the certificates with which he contested the election. ....

Edo 2020: Appeal Court upholds Obaseki’s victory, throws out ADP, APP suits

The Court of Appeal in Benin on Wednesday upheld the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo at the 2020 governorship election.
The judgement was delivered barely two months after the Elections Petitions Tribunal struck out the petition by the Action Democratic Party (ADP) and its governorship candidate, Iboi Lucky.
The party had challenged the outcome of the September 19, 2020, governorship election, which returned Mr Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as governor of Edo. ....

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki’s motion seeking to strike out the names of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the All Progressives Party (APC) from the petition filed by the Action Democratic Party (ADP) has suffered a setback at the Edo State Elections Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City.
Besides, Igbere TV reports that the tribunal also declined to strike out ADP’s petition against Governor Obaseki, insisting it would hear it on its merit as against the request of the governor.

The petition of the ADP and its governorship candidate obtained by Igbere TV, on Tuesday, is with reference number: EPT/ED/GOV/01/2020, with INEC, PDP, Obaseki, APC and its governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as respondents. ....
