“I t feels like a part of oneself is gone,” my friend Ajmal Jami texted me hours after the news broke of the death of Danish Siddiqui the 38-year-old Reuters photojournalist killed while covering the armed conflict between Afghanistan Special Forces and the Taliban, on assignment in Kandahar.
Jami is a decade senior to me and Danish was nearly a decade junior. In common between us is AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia, where each of us had studied before embarking on our careers as photo and video journalists. “Danish’s death cuts deep,” Jami added. “We have been there, gone through that same mix of adrenalin, fear, wound up tension, exhilaration and sorrow.”

I was a teenager when I looked at the newspaper one morning and saw a photo of three sisters who had died by suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling fan in their home in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The younger sisters were closer to my own age. The photo had been clicked before the bodies were taken down the girls were suspended in mid-air, their necks broken, their faces recognisable. The image has been impossible to forget.
The accompanying text narrated a story of the family’s economic struggle and their anxiety over their inability to arrange dowry for their daughters’ marriage according to community norms. The young women had executed a suicide pact to relieve their parents of the socio-cultural burden of raising daughters in a society where they are perceived as an encumbrance and a potential risk to the honour of the family.

One of my best friends has been in a hospital ICU all this week. How does one discover who one’s best friend is? Sometimes they need to land up in hospital for you to realise that even though you may have met in your adult years when it is cooler to be busy and distant rather than enthusiastic about each other you are quite madly in love with this person. The physical reaction in your body tells you that you are no longer okay after finding out that your friend is seriously ill.
I’m one of those gifted people who has lots of friends. Sometimes I joke that I don’t make friends. Friends make me. My friend, S, however, is the exception. When I first began to read her online, I was fascinated by her candid demeanor. She seemed so sure of herself. So confident and casual about being seen by strangers online. I wanted her to know me, even as I regarded my own self as awkward and tongue-tied.
