'At a critical point': Calgary a ground zero in Canada's COVID-19 crisis

“Calgary’s at a critical point,” said Henry, chief of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.
“It’s obvious we’re fully entrenched in the third wave and our case counts continue to rise. . . Active cases are higher than at any point since the pandemic began.”
She noted Ontario, now fully engulfed in a crisis that’s been overwhelming its health-care system, has an active case count of 275.5 per 100,000 people.
But that pales in comparison to Canada-leading Alberta, with 454.7 cases per 100,000, while Calgary’s are higher still at 488.9 with the city consistently leading the province’s urban centres, said Henry.

City plans to give out grants for hail-resistant roof repairs

Council’s finance committee approved the program in principle on Tuesday.
Officials are looking at giving out 50 grants in each quadrant of the city, but Mayor Naheed Nenshi said it’s worth discussing whether just northeast Calgary should be prioritized at first, given the scope of the damage from last year’s storm.
The mayor added that it’s important to ensure contractors and roofers are familiar with sturdier roofing materials, and that it increasingly becomes the norm for homeowners to ask for them.
After the June 2020 hailstorm, the provincial government stepped in with disaster relief funding, but only covered uninsurable losses such as overland flooding. Hail and sewer backup damage was excluded because that coverage is considered readily available. ....

Council committee approves plan to spend $14M on mental health work

City council’s finance committee approved a strategy Tuesday for spending the remaining $14 million in Calgary’s $25-million mental-health and addiction action plan.
Council first started work on the strategy in 2018. Mayor Naheed Nenshi has said he wants it to be a made-in-Calgary model that other cities can emulate to help break down barriers for people trying to access services they need.
