About the Nile River Ports Project
The River Transport Authority (RTA) of Egypt recently faced challenges to attract bids for a pilot river port project, as investors believed they were asked to bear too much risk.
Consequently, the RTA requested the assistance of the Investment Security in the Mediterranean Support Programme (ISMED) on the Nile river ports project, in order to enhance Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the construction of four river ports in Qena, Sohag, Meet Ghamr and Assuit.
The goal of this project is to substantially increase transport of cargo by river within the next five years, thereby reducing road congestion, pollution, and expenditure on fuel subsidies. ....

Reportedly on April 7 this year, a delegation made up of engineers from Egypt’s River Transport Authority, in addition to the president of the board of the Nile Valley Authority for River Navigation, an Egyptian-Sudanese organization that works in the transportation of passengers as well as goods, and advisers in port construction agreed to set up a joint committee for the implementation of the project.
The technical studies related to the project have already been elaborated after the new port’s site was selected in accordance with Lake Nubia’s water level requirements, which will help facilitate the maritime movement of the Nile Valley Authority for River Navigation. ....

New River Humane Society funding being explored

Declining coal severance funds in recent years have left county governments with less funds to disperse when assessing annual budget requests from agencies within their purview.
Over the years, the Fayette County Commission has funded the New River Humane Society animal shelter, located near the Fayette County Park in Beckwith, primarily through the coal severance tax, Fayette County Commissioner Tom Louisos said in a Monday press release.
At one time, the county received $1.1 million in revenue from coal severance tax, Louisos said. That amount has fallen to approximately $100,000, according to Louisos, and it may not even exist next year. ....

Sudan Prosecutes Former Regime Officials on Corruption, Murder Charges

The Sudanese Public Prosecution announced it was taking legal action against a new group of former officials of ousted President Omar al-Bashir s regime on charges of murder, corruption and torture.
The Public Prosecution referred five cases of murder during protests in Atbara city to the judiciary, which will set date for the trials.
It also completed its investigations into an incident where a detainee was tortured to death by the Rapid Support Forces in December. The report will be referred to the judiciary within days. ....
