EC scraps controversial Nashik panchayat election for auction of seats

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Election Commission has cancelled the controversial Katrani village panchayat polls in Nashik where members were selected on the basis of how much they quoted in an open auction for the 11 seats.
The Commission had earlier stayed the elections held on January 15, after reports became public that seats had been auctioned.
After a probe, the entire election process was declared cancelled on Sunday.
The Commission also decided to initiate action against persons who violated basic election principles and reduced the process to a farce.
UPS Madan, State Election Commissioner, said they had investigated the matter, seen videos of the auctioning and on the basis of a primary probe report, the election was cancelled. ....

Maharashtra EC cancels village panchayat elections that auctioned 11 seats- The New Indian Express

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Election Commission has cancelled the controversial Katrani Village Panchayat election in Nasik district where 11 members were elected through open auctioning.
According to the Election commission, the Katrani village Panchayat election was scheduled on January 15, but following media reports, a stay order was passed. However, after the primary probe, the entire election process has been cancelled. The EC has also decided to initiate action against the people who violated the principles of free elections.
State Election Commissioner UPS Madan said that they had probed the circulated videos of that particular Village Panchayat of auctioning, and on basis of primary probe report, the decision was undertaken. ....
