Brookline gives a nod to commercial taxpayers with 2021 tax rates

Wicked Local
The Select Board voted Tuesday to shift less of this year’s tax levy to commercial property owners, an attempt to ease the burden on local businesses facing COVID-related financial hardships.
Each year, Brookline approves tax rates for both residential and commercial property owners. The Select Board can shift some of the tax burden from residential property to commercial, industrial and personal property (CIP) classes.
Last year’s commercial tax rate was 172.5% higher than the residential  rate before the exemption for owner-occupied property was factored in. The residential exemption rate will stay the same as last year at 21% of the average value of all residential property.
