Guwahati, May 6 : The number of elected MLAs with criminal cases and crorepatis (millionaire) increased by over 10 per cent in the recent Assam assembly elections compared to the 2016 polls, data analysis revealed.
The Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 126 winning candidates and found that 27 per cent winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves this time against 11 per cent last time. The analysis said that 34 winning candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves this time against 14 MLAs in 2016. The report said that 28 (22 per cent) winning candidates have declared serious criminal cases related to murder, attempt to murder, crimes against women. ....

BJP announces 70 candidates for Assam polls; AGP to fight in 26 seats


The BJP on Friday released its first list of 70 candidates for the Assam assembly polls and announced that allies Asom Gana Parishad and United People s Party Liberal will contest on 26 and eight seats respectively.
The three-phased elections for the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on March 27, April 1 and April 6.
Party general secretary Arun Singh told a press conference that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will contest from the Majuli (ST) reserved constituency and state minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from Jalukbari.
The two seats are currently represented by the two top state BJP leaders in the assembly.
Assam BJP chief Ranjit Dass will contest the polls from Patacharkuchi instead of Sarbhog from where he won in the last elections. ....
