‘Benefit Fraud’: Govt officials reimburse man after punishment
The Narayanganj district administration reimbursed some of the money a man spent for distributing relief among 100 people as punishment for seeking government food assistance.
The executive magistrate, who handed down the punishment, had claimed that seventy-five-year-old Farid Ahmmed Khan resorted to benefit fraud.
Locals, however, said the man, along with his family members, lives from hand to mouth and that the punishment became a huge burden on the person struggling to survive.
Farid s wife Hiron Begum said they had to borrow and spend around Tk 75,000 to arrange the food distribution.
Talking to The Daily Star last night, Farid said he got Tk 60,000. The district administration said the remaining Tk 15,000 would be given later, he added. ....

The Coastguards have detained a cargo vessel that hit a passenger launch last Sunday, killing 34 passengers on the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj.

The 14 crew members of the cargo vessel were also detained on Thursday in Munshiganj’s Gojaria, where the vessel was anchored.
They include the vessel’s Master Wahiduzzaman, 55, and sailor Mojnu Molla, 38.
The red vessel, SKL-3, was painted white to conceal its identity but the Coastguards tracked it, said Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mustain Billah.
Witnesses and survivors said the launch, Sabit Al Asad, packed beyond capacity, sank on Apr 4 after being hit by SKL-3. The captain of the vessel ignored warnings three times, said ‘Anis’, a security guard at the Third Shitalakkhya Bridge project. ....

Dhaka, April 6 : Of the 30 bodies found after a ferry capsized in the Shitalakkhya river in Bangladesh s Narayanganj district, two corpses of a woman and her one-year-old daughter were discovered embraced in a tight hug.
I was struggling to retrieve one of the bodies, but finally found that two corpses were holding each other tight. So, I did not separate them, a local diver, Mominul, said.
The diver added that he was left in utter shock following the discovery. ....
