County Board Honors Outgoing Health Officer

Berrien County Health Officer Nicki Britten has been honored by the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. During Thursday’s meeting, Chair Mac Elliott read a resolution saluting Britten for all that she’s done to keep the county safe while working for the health department for the past 12 years. Britten leaves at the end of this week.
“Now therefore be it hereby resolved that the Berrien County Board of Commissioners thanks Nicki Britten for being a true asset to the citizens of Berrien County and wishes her much luck in her future endeavors,” Elliott read.

Berrien County Appoints New Friend Of The Court

Berrien County has a new friend of the court. During Thursday’s meeting, the Berrien County Board of Commissioners approved the appointment of Lisa Jardine to the post as Tom Watson is retiring. Board Chair Mac Elliott said Jardine is a good choice.
“She captures a high level of knowledge and skill and marries that with a very impressive professional demeanor,” Elliott said.
Jardine has been the deputy director of the friend of court’s office. The county board Thursday also approved a resolution honoring Tom Watson for his many years of service. The resolution says Watson’s life and service reflect favorably on him and on the county. The friend of court investigates and makes recommendations regarding custody cases. ....

County Board Meets In Person For First Time Since Last Year

The Berrien County Board of Commissioners has met in person and with the public for the first time in more than a year. Thursday’s regular meeting was the old-fashioned kind with all commissioners and citizens present at the county admin building in St. Joseph. Chair Mac Elliott welcomed everyone.
“I’m glad we are all here,” Elliott said. “We all know people who are no longer with us who we’ve lost in the last year and a half, some way before their time.”
Elliott said he was glad to see all the regulars back at the meeting. The county’s state of emergency due to COVID expired at the end of Wednesday. That means all local elected bodies in Berrien County will be meeting in person again. There is still one change with the county board, though. It’s broadcasting its regular meetings on YouTube thanks to the new audio and video system the county installed during the pandemic. ....

County Board To Discuss Return To In-Person Meetings

Things could soon return to near-normal for the Berrien County Board of Commissioners. During Thursday’s meeting, which was over Zoom, Commissioner Julie Wuerfel made a suggestion.
“I would just like to request that we start a plan to go back to in-person meetings, perhaps in June,” Wuerfel said. “The CDC lifting outdoor guidance, and the governor adopting that guidance, our parks can certainly accommodate our meetings for outdoors, or if we do indoors, if we go to a hybrid method with the commission being together and the public on Zoom.”
Wuerfel said she recently attended a meeting of the St. Joseph Township Board of Trustees that was done via a hybrid model, and it worked well. Commission Chair Mac Elliott said he’ll ask the administration committee to discuss plans for a return to in-person meetings.
