In India’s 2021 budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed merging the four acts that presently govern capital markets and securities, namely the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992 (SEBI Act), the Depositories Act, 1996 (Depositories Act), Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956 (SCRA) and Government Securities Act, 2007 (Government Securities Act), to form a single securities markets code.

India is making rapid strides towards ushering in a new data protection regime. The Draft Personal Data Protection Bill that is under review and is being deliberated by the Joint Parliamentary Committee is expected to sweep through the economy with major revamps to the statutory and regulatory landscape. The current Draft Bill has proposed the establishment of a data regulator the “Data Protection Authority of India (DPA)” which will be entrusted with the “duty to protect the interests of the data principals, prevent any misuse of personal data, ensure compliance with the provisions of the Act and promote awareness about data protection”. ....

Synopsis
India’s existing consumer redressal system is fragmented and overseen by sectoral regulators such as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for banks and the Insurance Regulatory and Developmental Authority (Irda) for insurance-related grievances. The government is of the view that this fragmented regulatory architecture leads to inconsistent treatment of both consumer complaints and micro-prudential regulation.

Once this is stabilised, it would look into complaints against financial service providers regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) as well as retail complaints handled by the RBI and the Banking Ombudsman. ....

While ushering in a set of reforms that liberalise agricultural markets to benefit farmers, the government is, ironically, facing huge protests.
The reforms will allow farmers to sell their produce directly to anyone they want, and they should have welcomed the new laws, as they free them from the clutches of middlemen and could provide them better price for their produce. But instead, the farmers fear that the reforms could pave the way for the government withdrawing from its obligation of procuring agricultural produce at minimum support prices (MSP). ....
