The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has found that no misconduct was committed by SAPS when a water cannon was used on a crowd of social grant recipients queueing outside the SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) in Bellville earlier this year.
In the report, seen by
GroundUp, IPID said that “there were no lesser interventions at the disposal of SAPS” to disperse a crowd refusing to move and that no complaints were received of injuries from the incident. It also said the water was specifically sprayed in the air and not directly at people and only for a short time. ....

Sassa says it successfully finalised 37,900 temporary disability grant assessments before its 31 March deadline. This leaves about 10,000 people with lapsed grants who still need to be medically assessed. Some of these people can’t be tracked by Sassa or missed their appointments, the agency says.
But activist organisation Black Sash has said that despite progress clearing the backlog, its community monitoring has shown that the issue is “far from resolved”.
Black Sash has picked up several cases where medical assessments were only scheduled after March, said national director Lynette Maart. She said that in addition, those who had been assessed did not know when a decision would be made. ....

Sassa vows to meet its disability grant deadline despit...

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is confident that the backlog of assessments for disability grants in the Western Cape will be cleared by the deadline of 31 March, general manager Sibusiso Nhlangothi told the Western Cape legislature this week. He said virtual medical assessments were being used to speed up the process.
Temporary disability and care dependency grants were due to lapse in February last year but due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the grants were extended to 31 December by social development Minister Lindiwe Zulu. Sassa has said it cannot afford to extend all grants further. Beneficiaries have been urged to re-apply at Sassa offices with a detailed doctor’s report. ....

Ricardo Mackenzie urges the executive and every government official in the Western Cape to work with the Children s Commissioner to ensure the best interests of children are protected and promoted.
For the past six years, I have served on and chaired several committees in the Western Cape legislature and being part of the process of appointing the Western Cape Children s Commissioner has been my proudest achievement to date.
The Children s Commissioner is appointed in terms of the Children s Commissioner Act, following legislation that was signed into power in March 2019.
