New Zealand cheesemakers are upset over moves by the European Union to grant exclusive use of the term halloumi to the Cypriot producers, NewstalkZB reported on Thursday.
Earlier this month, the European Commission said it had officially registered halloumi as a protected designation of origin (PDO) so that only halloumi produced in Cyprus and according to the product specification can use the registered name.
This has caused concern among producers in New Zealand.
Neil Willman, president of the Specialist Cheesemakers Association, said New Zealand produced halloumi is popular with consumers. ....

Halloumi cheese EU regional naming rights raise concerns for New Zealand dairy

The European Commission recently granted exclusive use of the term halloumi within Europe to cheesemakers from Cyprus, using the intellectual property rights system called geographical indications .
The move to register halloumi follows behind the recent registrations of cheeses like havarti.
Specialist Cheesemakers Association president Neil Willman said New Zealand s cheesemaking community was concerned that the European Union was continuing to protect cheese terms that are generic and in common use around the world.
We are concerned at Europe s continuing campaign to restrict the use of common names in international cheesemaking, at the expense of producers outside of Europe. ....

Kiwi cheesemakers are fighting back against the EU s protection of the name halloumi.
Already no cheese in the EU can be called halloumi unless it was made in Cyprus and now European lawmakers want to extend that to New Zealand.
The rubbery cheese is the latest in a string of naming rights demands the EU is making which includes products from feta to gorgonzola.
Cheesemakers in New Zealand say it s a tactic to shut them out of growing export markets.
