Anglicare Southern Queensland has marked International Year of Health and Care Workers by recognising the achievements of staff and volunteers who provide vital support for vulnerable Queenslanders.
More than 200 staff members, volunteers and clients gathered at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre recently for the not-for-profit charity’s inaugural Excellence Awards.
Anglicare SQ’s Executive Director Karen Crouch said it was important for people working in the health and community services sector to recognise the contributions they make in our local communities.
“As a provider of essential care and support services for vulnerable people, our work never stops. We are all so focused on the needs of our clients, residents, children and families, that reflecting on our own achievements is often not top of mind,” Ms Crouch said. ....

$44 million to extend dementia training, education and support
The Australian Government will extend grant agreements for programs providing support, training and education for services and individuals caring for people living with dementia.
An extra $44 million will be provided to Dementia Training Australia and Dementia Support Australia to extend the following national programs from July 2021 to June 2022:
Dementia Training Program (DTP)
Severe Behaviour Response Teams (SBRT)
Needs Based Assessment (NBA), which is a component of the Specialist Dementia Care Program.
Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care Services, Richard Colbeck, said the programs improved care for people living with dementia. ....

JANE Allen’s husband Nicho was diagnosed with dementia two years ago and became increasingly aggressive as his condition progressed.
However, a specialist program at Uniting Eabrai aged care home in Weston is helping to support the couple.
The Specialist Dementia Care Program (SDCP), which opened in July, offers tailored care to people living with severe behavioural symptoms of dementia, in a dedicated dementia-friendly environment, says Georgene McNeil, dementia and behaviour management practice lead (NSW & ACT).
“Only around seven per cent of people who have dementia exhibit behaviours, but when they do, they need an environment that allows for the behaviour to express itself in a way that doesn’t require pharmacological intervention,” she says. ....
