The Rio Grande River Keepers, Making Waves and Setting the Example in Southern Belize!
There is a small group of children and youth who are making waves on the Rio Grande River. The residents of San Pedro Columbia in Toledo are removing garbage from their beloved river and also setting an example for other young people in Belize. Reporter Andrea Polanco connected with the stewards of the Rio Grande to share their inspiring community-based initiative. Here’s the story.

The Rio Grande River is scenic and winding – with rapids and smooth sparkling green water that runs through several villages in Toledo. It is a lifeline for many of these communities including San Pedro Columbia where hundreds of people use this river almost every day. But the Rio Grande has become polluted over the years and now there is a group of young people doing something about it. They are called the Rio Grande River Keepers. ....

Tonight, we take you to Toledo where another protected area is under threat from Guatemalans illegally clearing large swaths of Belizean land. The Maya Mountain North Forest Reserve incursions are happening just a few miles into the forest and the Ya’axche Conservation Trust has disturbing drone footage to prove it. Reporter Andrea Polanco tells us more in the following story.

There are land clearings happening inside the Maya Mountain North Forest Reserve. This is a protected area that has multiple uses, including a thriving and model agro-forestry cacao concession. But the encroachments are inching closer and managers of this protected area are worried. YCT’s Executive Director Christina Garcia says it’s the work of Guatemalans. ....

It took the People’s United Party eighteen years to regain municipal government control in San Pedro. But it did so in convincing fashion on Wednesday, snagging all six councilor seats and the mayoral position as well. Although many thought it would be a nail-biting neck and neck finish, with perhaps even a split council, the P.U.P. proved that it was the residents’ favourite party. This comes off the heels of the November eleventh victory when Andre Perez also overwhelmingly beat his U.D.P. predecessor, Manuel Heredia Junior for the Belize Rural South seat in central government. So many families in Belize have lost loved ones to violence, but for one Belize City mother, the cycle just never ends. Today, News Five spoke with Irene Wallace, who has had four of her sons murdered, with the most recent on Friday night. Reporter Andrea Polanco has more in the following story.
