NBN subcontractors reach deal with NBN Co partner Lendlease

The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union of Australia (CEPU) and its NBN subcontractor-members reached an agreement with NBN Co delivery partner Lendlease to discuss the future of the network’s contracting model.
The union said Lendlease has agreed to “facilitate a genuine pathway” for NBN subcontractors to have direct engagement whenever the company secures a contract, bypassing prime contractors.
NBN subcontractors that are part of the CEPU have engaged in industrial action earlier this week to protest the reduction of their pay rates. The subcontractors agreed to walk off the job on Monday and marched to NBN Co s offices in Sydney, Melbourne and at the CommsDay Summit throughout the week. ....

'Racist undertones' felt in India ban by some people

Racist undertones felt in India ban by some people05/05/2021|7min
Shadow Communications Minister Michelle Rowland says the India ban has been expressed as racist by some constituents, but has stopped short of labelling it as such herself.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the ban on arrivals from India last week in response to the nation s surging cases.
“I must say it’s been expressed across a range of people, not only people of Indian descent,” Ms Rowland told Sky News.
“There is a feeling by some people that this does have an element of racist undertones.”

'Both sides are claiming victory' as the government and Facebook reach a compromise

Shadow Communications Minister Michelle Rowland says while each side has been written up as the winner, a compromise has been struck between Facebook and the government.

Facebook is set to restore access to news content after the Morrison government announced it will introduce a number of technical amendments to its media bargaining code.

“I think if you read some of the commentary … each side is being written up as being the winner or the other side having backed down” Ms Rowland said.

“But I think a compromise has been struck, Facebook will return its news services to Australia, the government will be amending its own legislation.

“I think we need to remain outcomes focused as Labor has always been and that’s about ensuring that news media is properly recompensed for the valuable role it lays with public interest journalism”.

Ms Rowland told Sky News she hopes the deals can be done so both Facebook’s requirements can be satisfied, an ....

Facebook ban points to 'potential for misinformation to proliferate online'

Shadow Communications Minister Michelle Rowland has raised concerns about the level of misinformation on Facebook – particularly about the COVID-19 vaccine – now all Australian news content has been blocked from the platform.

She said the social media giant’s decision to ban Australian news “has shone a light on the potential for misinformation to proliferate on the internet, which would be very grave at a time when we want Australians to come forward and get vaccinated”.

“Some of the analysis has been very telling both before and after news was switched off, prior to that there was some strong arguments that this could make a very less compelling platform because it would be proliferated by fake news rather than official sources,” Ms Rowland told Sky News.

“And some analysis just in the past couple of days has indicated that has come to fruition in some ways”.
