Government archives here and elsewhere bulge with reports of commissions, committees and panels set up by governments to get at the facts of matters of public interest.
Some of such reports see the light; most do not. The public is kept in the dark and thus none the wiser.
This hacks to the struggle by the people seeking to exercise their right to know what each hand of their government is doing. It is also a struggle by governments to create the impression they respect the right of the people to know but reserve the right to let them know only what they want them to know. Presidency: Magu's Eligibility for Promotion Depends on Probe Outcome

The Presidency on Thursday said the eligibility of the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, for promotion in the Nigerian Police will depend on the outcome of the panel that probed his tenure as EFCC boss.
There had been recent reports that Magu had been penciled down for promotion from his present rank of Police Commissioner to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) by the Police Service Commission (PSC) despite the alleged adverse recommendations of the Justice Ayo Salami panel that investigated the allegations.
But in a statement issued by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, denying the involvement of President Muhammadu Buhari in the promotion exercise, the Presidency affirmed that Magu’s fate depends on the outcome of the investigation. ....

Magu not among 24 CPs promoted to AIGs by PSC

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 24 Commissioners of Police (CPs) to Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs).
But the commission did not promote former Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, a Commissioner of Police (CP).
The commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, announced this Thursday  in a statement in Abuja, titled: PSC Promotes 24 CPs, 35 DCPs, 52 ACPs, 50 CSPs, Drops Ibrahim Magu.
According to Ani, the decisions were the highpoints of the commission’s 12th plenary meeting held on Tuesday, July 6 and Wednesday, July 7, and presided over by PSC Chairman Musiliu Smith, a retired Inspector General of Police (IGP). ....
