Catholic bishops in Bangladesh have denounced deadly violence in Myanmar as scores of people continue to be killed in the crackdown on nationwide anti-coup protests.
In a statement issued by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Bangladesh (CBCB), the prelates expressed solidarity with the Myanmar people’s aspirations for an end to military rule and the restoration of democracy through dialogue. ....

A prominent Bangladeshi writer has died in a high-security prison nine months after he was arrested under the country’s draconian Digital Security Act for criticizing corruption and the government’s poor response to the Covid-19 pandemic on Facebook.  
Mushtaq Ahmed, 53, a noted writer and founder of the country’s first commercially successful crocodile farm, died on Feb. 25.
He was transported after suddenly falling ill to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College, where a doctor declared him dead, said Gias Uddin, jail superintendent of Kashimpur prison in Gazipur district near capital Dhaka. ....

A court in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka has sentenced to death five members of a banned Islamic extremist group for murdering a Bangladesh-born US citizen writer for his books and writings on secularism and atheism.
Judge Md Majibur Rahman of the Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal passed the death sentence on Feb. 16 for the killing of Avijit Roy, a prominent writer and founder of free-thinking blog site Muktomona, in 2015. Two militants were sentenced in absentia. ....

Minority leaders including a Catholic Church official have welcomed a decision by Bangladeshi police to censor popular Islamic gatherings in order to stop radical clerics from delivering inflammatory and indecent speeches.
A senior police official said on Jan. 19 that they will keep an eye on
waz mahfils (Islamic gatherings) to identify clerics and take action over radical, provocative and hate speech in sermons. ....

A senior Catholic official has called on Bangladesh’s government to take effective steps to improve human rights in the country following a damning report from a global rights watchdog.
In its World Report 2021 published Jan. 13, New York-based Human Rights Watch slammed Bangladeshi authorities for failing to stop crackdowns on dissent, unabated extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances amid increasing authoritarianism under the pretext of the Covid-19 pandemic. ....
