LETTER | The mandatory retirement age for the superior court judges in Malaysia is 66 years with a possible extension of six months as laid down in Article 125(1) of the Federal Constitution.
A judge may however resign from his office at any time by writing under his hand to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Except as above, a superior court judge cannot be removed from office other than for the grounds stated in article 125(3), namely when he has violated any provision of the code of ethics prescribed under clause (3B) or on the ground of inability, from infirmity of body or mind or any other cause, properly to discharge the functions of his office. ....

Court of Appeal Judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer, who had made allegations of judicial misconduct, has reportedly been suspended by the Judges’ Ethics Committee (JEC).
A report by
Free Malaysia Today said the committee has suspended him from today until Aug 27 when the judge is due to retire.

KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 4): The Judges’ Ethics Committee (JEC) today decided to suspend the Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Dr Hamid Sultan Abu Backer from today until Aug 27, 2021.
The decision was made in a closed-door inquiry proceedings in the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya this afternoon which was chaired by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
Other panel members were Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Azahar Mohamed, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, Federal Court Judge Datuk Vernon Ong Lam Kiat and two former Federal Court Judges Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar and Datuk Dr Prasad Sandosham Abraham. ....

Some months ago, Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer revealed in an affidavit made by him in connection with a case, of several instances of interference with the judicial process.
The allegations of impropriety at the highest judicial levels, of high-profile cases involving opposition politicians, leave us wondering about the veracity of decisions arrived at by our courts.

Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer failed to obtain a court order to temporarily stay the Judges’ Ethics Committee inquiry against him set for Thursday this week.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court this morning dismissed his stay application during an online hearing conducted before judge Mariana Yahya today.
In dismissing the bid, the court ruled that there were no special circumstances that justify the interim stay pending disposal of an appeal.
Hamid Sultan had sought the stay pending his appeal to the Court of Appeal against the High Court’s dismissal. ....
