Mumbai hits single-day record for jabs at over 88k, wastage below 1% for 3 months | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The unique strategies used by vaccination centres in the city to ensure minimal vaccine wastage seem to have paid off.
Civic numbers show wastage has remained below 1% in the past three months. The city on Friday also hit a record of highest single-day vaccinations at 88,527. Over 35 lakh people have now received at least one dose.
The jabs given on Friday include 69,228 in the private sector and 18,389 in the public sector. Additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said the erratic supply of doses has hit the drive in the public sector. Private hospitals are now getting tranches of nearly 30,000-50,000 doses each. On Saturday, vaccination will be only through online appointments.

Deconstructing the 'Mumbai Model': How it turned the tide

Deconstructing the 'Mumbai Model’: How it turned the tide
Mumbai with a population of 12.3 million has fared better than Delhi in tackling the pandemic. Small wonders that other States are now following the ‘Mumbai Model’ to stop the spread of Coronavirus
From being the epicentre of the Coronavirus outbreak in the state to being hailed as a successful containment model, Mumbai has come a long way. With a high population density, the city faced a shortage of beds and oxygen as the second wave of COVID-19 started to peak, but according to BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal, it is now self-sufficient to meet its medical oxygen demand.

Mumbai: 'No proper food & accommodation', nurses at Covid hospital go on flash strike | Mumbai News

Representative Image
MUMBAI: Nearly 200 nurses working at the Nesco jumbo Covid hospital in Goregaon went on a flash strike on Sunday to protest their living conditions. They resumed work at 3pm after a written assurance from the facility head that their demands will be considered.
Nurses, who had gathered at the hospital around 9am, said it was their last resort as their complaints about lack of facilities in their accommodation were never taken seriously. Nurses working at Nesco have been staying at a Mhada building in Goregaon for the past year. What triggered the strike was a decision to shift them to a school in Dindoshi, which they said was neither well connected nor near any eateries. They have also been complaining about being cramped in smaller buses that take them home from the Covid centre.

Mumbai: Vaccine shortage acute, centres told to give priority to 2nd jabs | Mumbai News

Representative Image
MUMBAI: Acute vaccine shortage prompted the BMC to instruct vaccination centres on Friday to prioritise those coming in for the second dose.
Across Mumbai, thousands are either being turned away or are forced to head from one centre to another looking for vaccine doses. Booking an appointment though Co-Win has become a near-impossible task.
“Why are you asking the state? Ask the Centre why there are no doses,” said Dr Dilip Patil, the state’s immunisation in-charge, on Friday. With less than 7 lakh vaccine doses in its kitty, vaccination is likely to suffer majorly across Maharashtra through the weekend. In Mumbai, Dr Mangala Gomare, the BMC’s executive health officer, said they were expecting 50,000 doses on Friday. Many private centres that didn’t do vaccination through the week may remain shut.
