Australian union agrees to enforce ten-year strike ban at Melbourne port
Over recent weeks the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has brokered new enterprise agreements (EAs) with major stevedoring companies across a number of Australian ports.
The agreement that most glaringly encapsulates the MUA’s decades-long drive to incorporate itself ever deeper into management structures and cement its position as an industrial police force for the stevedoring employers is the four-year deal it brokered with Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT).

As part of the VICT agreement, the MUA has agreed to enforce a ten-year ban on “illegal” industrial action at the facility in exchange for the company dropping an $80 million damages claim against the union that arose from its picketing of the Webb Dock terminal in 2017. The Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)’s Australian aubsidiary, recently welcomed the container vessel Soroe Maersk, the longest vessel to call at the Melbourne port.
The vessel’s “record-breaking” maiden call shows that the Port of Melbourne is ready to accommodate the global trend of growing vessel sizes, Brendan Bourke, Port of Melbourne CEO, maintained.

Maersk deployed the Soroe Maersk to Sydney and Melbourne to load empty containers to be repositioned back to Asia where there is a shortage.
The vessel has a total carrying capacity of 9,640 TEUs and a record length of 346.98 meters, 11.28 meters longer than the previous longest vessels to call at the port. ....

Port of Melbourne welcomes longest vessel to dock in Melbourne
The Port of Melbourne and Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT) recently welcomed the container vessel Soroe Maersk, the longest vessel to call at the port.
Maersk deployed the Soroe Maersk to Sydney and Melbourne to load empty containers that need to be repositioned back to Asia where there is a shortage. The vessel has a total carrying capacity of 9,640 TEUs and a record length of 346.98 meters, 11.28 meters longer than the previous longest vessels to call at the port.
The Soroe Maersk departed on midday Tuesday, 6 April after loading 4,148 TEUs.
Brendan Bourke, CEO Port of Melbourne, welcomed the record breaking arrival, noting that through its port development strategy and investment programs, the Port of Melbourne stands ready to accommodate the global trend of growing vessel sizes. ....

Workers at the Victoria International Container Terminal in Melbourne, Australia, are expanding legally protected industrial action later this week, undertaking a series of stoppages and bans as they fight for a new workplace agreement.
The Maritime Union of Australia said the workers have proposed to ensure any containers that contain medicines, medical supplies, or urgent medical equipment are exempt from the industrial action.
The union has also committed to exempting all refrigerated containers from the planned industrial action, ensuring agricultural exports, fresh food, and perishable goods are not impacted. ....

Wharfies fire first salvo in fight for robo-dock

Wharfies will stop work for four hours at the Port of Melbourne next week as the first salvo in what is being pitched as a battle between old-school industrial practices and 21st century technology.
The Maritime Union of Australia has given the automated Victoria International Container Terminals (VICT) eight days’ notice for its half-shift stoppage covering 128 members from 4pm to 8pm on Tuesday, February 16.
Unions previously blocked the Webb Dock terminal for two and half weeks in 2017.

The protected strike is the first industrial action undertaken at VICT, which the union views as an existential threat due it having the only non-MUA agreement in the stevedoring sector. ....
