UNDP mission to restorenine wetlands in A.P. begins

The GCF project targets to cover 5,000 ha of mangrove
The forest authorities have launched the works pertaining to the restoration of 5,000 hectares of mangrove cover in the Krishna and Godavari estuaries and 200 hectares of salt marshes as part of the five-year project of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The programme titled ‘Enhancing climate resilience of India’s coastal communities’ is being funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
Of the 24 landscapes identified in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Maharastra for restoration at a cost of ₹298 crore, nine are in the State.
As part of the programme, the coastal communities would be provided with climate-adaptive livelihood options for the restoration of the targeted landscapes by mid-2025. ....

The unexpected sighting of an otter in the lake waters of the Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary, on the outskirts of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh recently, has generated excitement among birders, conservationists and the public. The smooth-coated otter, locally called Neeti Kukka or water dog, made its appearance at the end of January this year, at the sanctuary important for the near-threatened spot-billed pelicans (
Pelecanus philippensis).
“We have reports that there are about 15 of the otters in the wetland of the sanctuary that spreads across eight to nine acres now,” said Divisional Forest Officer, G Siva Prasad. ....

Noida: Flamingoes, pelicans keep birders busy at Okhla | Noida News

NOIDA: Birders in the city have spotted around 100 flamingoes and at least 40 pelicans at the Okhla Bird Sanctuary in the past few days.
Flamingoes have been regular at Okhla for the past two years. They usually stay deeper inside the waters at its shallow patches, but according to birders, this time, they are wading closer to the fringes of the 4 sqkm water body and can be seen without powerful lenses.
Birders state the flamingoes are swimming closer to the tar road now to forage in the shallow waters as the water level is currently low. A pelican flock reached the park recently. ....
