Situation overview
For several years, Niger has been experiencing a deplorable security and humanitarian situation on all its borders with neighboring countries. In addition to conventional threats such as the circulation of non-conventional weapons, drug and human trafficking and cross-border banditry, Niger is under pressure from non-governmental armed groups (NGAG) on three main fronts.

In the region of Diffa, the security situation remains essentially marked by repeated attacks and kidnappings for ransom demanded by non-governmental armed groups. According to UNOCHA, between January and September of 2020, approximately 402 people were killed, injured, or abducted, which resulted in death, injury, or continuous population movements, in the departments of N Guigmi, Bosso, Mainé Soroa and Diffa in search for protection. The United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF) in collaboration with Niger state Ministry of Education on Thursday called on Nigerians to promote reading culture in the society.
They made the call at an event for students and education secretaries to commemorate World Book Day and disseminate of a report on the assessment of textbook availability in classrooms and schools in Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Book and Copyright Day is an annual event marked in over 100 countries to promote reading, publishing, and even copyright. ....

Thousands of migrants, of various nationalities, living in Libya were forced to flee the violence and have sought refuge in Niger.
On this Wednesday morning, in the courtyard of the Katanga primary school in the town of Agadez, the thermometer registered 13° and there was a wind blowing dust along its path. But not that this discouraged the children from playing while they are waiting for the bell to ring for lessons to start.

Niger Govt secures release of kidnapped commuters

The Niger State Government has secured the release of all passengers abducted from the Niger State Transit Authority bus.
Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, confirmed this via Twitter on Sunday.
“We are pleased to announce to the general public the release of the NSTA passengers abducted a week ago while returning to Minna along the Minna-Zungeru road,” he tweeted.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mary Noel-Berje told Channels Television that the abductees were rescued around Zamfara State and are on their way to Niger State.
She however did not give details on how the government secured their release. ....
