How insecurity, poor facilities are forcing children out of school

In Kaduna State, despite the implementation of free and compulsory education, residents say insecurity is leading the factors responsible for school dropouts, particularly in rural communities where banditry attacks have become incessant.
Bala Udawa, a resident of Udawa in Chikun Local Government Area, said many children had been forced to abandon school for fear of being kidnapped.
On poor facilities, he said, “In my community, the school authority has no choice but to introduce shift for pupils. We usually had separate schools for both primary and secondary schools, but they now share the same school,” he said. He added that only dedicated parents would force their children to school in spite of the spate of insecurity. ....

The Federal Government, has disclosed that six million dollars have been released to Niger State under Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme to combat the menace of out-of-school children in the state.
Minister of State for Education, Hon Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, made this known, on Wednesday, during the flag-off of the BESDA programme in Minna, Niger State.
Director, Press and Public Relations, Mr Ben Bem Goong, in a statement, made available to newsmen said BESDA was aimed at assisting educationally disadvantaged states in reducing the number of out-of-school children in their respective domains. ....

Niger seeks support of development partners on education

THE Niger State Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Hannatu Jibrin Salihu, has appealed to development partners to support the state government in addressing some of the enormous challenges bedeviling the education sector in the state.
Salihu said this during the national dissemination and the launching of the 2020 Nigeria Education Data Survey (NEDS) report organised by the National Population Commission (NPC), in Minna, the state capital.
She noted that the launching of the 2020 NEDS report came at a time the ministry was strategising to bridge the gap in the education sector in the state.
She commended NPC, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBE) and the World Bank for their support in the successful conduct of NEDS, assuring them that the ministry would pursue the recommendation of the report to achieve UBEC and Education for all (EFA) goals. ....

Daily Trust - NPC launches 2020 education data report in Taraba

Represented by the Federal Commissioner of NPC in charge of Taraba State, Sani Sule Saleh, Kwarra explained that the conduct of the survey was a fulfillment of the mandate of the commission as contained in the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution.
Kwarra said the exercise was in response to the imperative of providing data for national planning, particularly in the education sector, adding that without data there could not be effective planning of any sort because it inspired development.
He further said currently the Federal Government, with support from the World Bank, was implementing the BESDA programme in 17 focus states across the six geopolitical zones. ....
