GHG Reducing Solutions Already Out There

Wins can be made right now to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG)
emissions from road freight transport, says Road Transport
Forum (RTF) chief executive Nick Leggett.
In its
submission on Increasing the use of biofuels in transport,
the RTF says the Government should be more decisive and fast
acting in enabling tangible progress on reducing
GHG.
Instead of waiting for the perfect heavy truck
to be produced that meets their view of decarbonisation -
which could be years away and is still largely, in fantasy
land - the Government could be acting now with solutions
that actually exist to reduce GHG, Leggett

There is insufficient evidence to support a pedestrian crossing and consequent speed reductions on Cobham Drive, the State Highway 1 route to and from Wellington airport, says Road Transport Forum (RTF) chief executive Nick Leggett.
Submissions close this week on Let’s Get Wellington Moving’s proposed crossing on Cobham Drive and lowering of speeds on State Highway 1, east of Mt Victoria. The RTF is part of a group of Wellington businesses and stakeholders frustrated by Let’s Get Wellington Moving’s progress and focus.

auckland.scoop.co.nz » Good Roads Critical To Infrastructure Goals

Press Release – Road Transport Forum
Without good roads few of the infrastructure goals laid out by the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission will be realised, says Road Transport Forum (RTF) chief executive Nick Leggett.
The RTF has responded to the He Tūāpapa ki te Ora Infrastructure for a Better Future: NZ Infrastructure Commission Strategy Consultation Document stressing the need for roads; electricity generation to match demand; distribution infrastructure to match alternative “fuel” sources; and connectivity throughout New Zealand to support both technology in trucks and communications with customers.
“The conundrum for us is commenting on future infrastructure while the Government downplays roading investment and cancels significant roading projects in favour of funding the Auckland cycle bridge, without any appropriate economic evaluation,” Leggett says.

The hunt is on for black ice as Waikato motorists slip in freezing conditions

That’s why bridges get colder and icier quicker.
Black ice is very difficult to identify in the dark, and it can be harder to predict than snow is, Lauder said.
“It’s a tricky one, because you can get it in a very isolated little pockets of cold, that’s not necessarily in the forecast, and it’s not obvious to people.”
The agency says they won t always know where and when ice will form, because it’s based on a forecasting system.
Waka Kotahi monitors the forecast, checking at 4pm the night before.
Rachael Kelly/Stuff/Stuff
Freezing fog and black ice make roading conditions treacherous in Winter.

Government Needs To Get Real About Decarbonisation

Thursday, 1 July 2021, 10:02 am
The Government needs a clearer position on transport
decarbonisation and to be more realistic about the societal
impacts while reducing emissions, says Road Transport Forum
(RTF) chief executive Nick Leggett.
While recognising
the considerable work done by Ministry of Transport Te
Manatū Waka (MoT) on Hīkina te Kohupara - Kia mauri ora ai
te iwi Transport Emissions: Pathways to Net Zero by 2050, in
its submission the RTF says the Government’s approach is
confusing, creates uncertainty in the freight sector, and
will increase transport costs, which they should be honest
about.
